            The Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) uses these Jeffrey Pines as "larders", boring holes and stuffing an acorn or nut in each one up and down the trunk and branches. This hoarding allows them to live here the year around, as they the fat-rich nuts provide nutrition in the leaner winter months. The storage strategy is also an excellent one: up in a tree rather than on the ground, so safe from other foragers, and by keeping each acorn in its own receptacle, they minimize the chances of loss of the entire hoard to mold and rot. The woodpeckers live in mixed male/female breeding/feeding communal groups, and each of their tree larders may store over 50,000 acorns and other nuts, each in their own distinct hole! In this series of photographs, I love the convergence of the vivid green moss, the ornate bark architecture , and the woodpecker larder cavities to form an intricate pattern and structure, over which is splashed the rich and dynamic palette formed by the interplay of the fiery setting sun and the cooler tones of the shadows of the creeping evening.
