The Hills Are Alive - a photo on Flickriver

            Rising up above the town of Lake Elsinore, California, was an otherworldly scene in spring of 2019. Looking like something out of perhaps Star Trek, the Temescal Mountains were coated neon orange poppies, neon yellow (perhaps hillside daisies though I don’t know for sure), and neon green spring growth. The atmosphere was thick with light blue haze, but not so thick that the snow-capped San Gabriel Mountains could not show through. On the left, Mount San Antonio, also known as Mount Baldy, shows off a significant cap of snow from 46 miles away, with smaller Cucamonga Peak on the right appearing just as tall by trick of being closer. The alien landscape was a bizarre sight in person and is still bizarre whenever I revisit the photos. I had been exploring these hills on foot a few weeks prior, and opted to stay away from the crowds and find a different perspective on this trip. From about 7 miles away, there was no crowd. The crowds of this year and the damage left in their wake would lead to the entire closure of the area to visitors in 2023.
