Cape Maria van Diemen

            Cape Maria van Diemen is the westernmost point of the North Island of New Zealand.  This fact is surprising since it is in the far north of the island. The cape was named by Abel Tasman, (first European explorer to discover New Zealand) after the wife of his patron, Anthony van Diemen, Governor General of Batavia (now Jakarta) in January 1643, on the same voyage of discovery during which he named Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). 
A walk to this cape had been on my wishlist for a very long time.  The opportunity arose when my daughter and her partner needed a lift to start a bike tour of New Zealand from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island.  We were keen to make a leisurely trip out of this drop off run and spend some days getting up there before sending them on their way.  The cape is a fantastic place to explore and has to be one of the best day walks in the country. The photo is a panorama stitched from seven vertical images.
