The new arch - a photo on Flickriver

The new arch

I stopped at Tongaporotu on the way back from hiking at Mount Taranaki. It was mindblowing to see the changes that had happened to this extremely dynamic coast since my last visit less than two years ago. This coast suffers the full impact of the prevailing westerly winds from the rough Tasman Sea. The elephant's trunk had collapsed, this freestanding arch had been created from the retreating coastal cliffs and the separation of a new third sister out of the eroding cliff has been completed. I was travelling alone and wanted a human scale in the photo. Several sprints into the picture later I had a selfie under the new arch.
29.9.2018 Update: On a return visit 7 months later I found this arch had collapsed and there were only two separate sea stacks left, a big one on the right and a small one on the left. See the remnants in a recent photo taken from further away: flic.kr/p/29aos7y
