Flightless Steamer Ducks, Ushuaia. - a photo on Flickriver

Flightless Steamer Ducks, Ushuaia.

            As far as I have been able to ascertain these two are Flightless Steamer Ducks. There is another very similar species the Flying Steamer Duck but they aren't often seen at the waterfront in Ushuaia. Of course the 'Flightless' component of their name describes their inability to fly. They manage to propel themselves across the surface of the water using their wings like paddles in a way that helps them skim rapidly. They are also huge and heavier than any other duck with males weighing an average of almost 12 pounds. I guess that a is a significant contributing factor to them being flightless.
