Sleep when you can! - a photo on Flickriver

            Caring for the elderly is a lot like caring for the very young.

I have been through parenthood and the sleepless nights with young babies, what I wasn't prepared for was the same thing with the elderly.

Both of my parents died while still physically and mentally able. My mother-in-law is a different story. Still going well at 98, well up until two weeks ago. Confusion and memory loss along with physical weakness and extreme tiredness have conspired to make her as dependant as a "new born". 

To make things worse the memory loss seems to terrify her and in response she gets aggressive. Over the last week she has been waking two or three times a night in a panic that "men are coming to kill her". This has led to her trying to escape and falling out of bed where she can't get back up.

last night she pressed her emergency call button three time "telling the operator" she had fallen - - she was actually still in bed but thought yesterdays fall had just happened.

Such a heart rending thing to watch as the woman I knew disappears and changes.
