Genealogy Tour Stop 2 - Albany Rural Cemetery office

            The Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, NY is a natural oasis that sprawls across 500 acres.  The cemetery was created in 1841 as part of the "rural cemetery movement" in the US. Previously many cemeteries in urban regions was small and adjacent to churches.  As urban church cemeteries were filling up, concern arose that they were health hazards.  Rural cemeteries were created outside the city center and many of the church cemeteries were closed and the graves relocated to rural cemeteries.  Albany is an early, successful example of the movement.
