Dry Moat Entrance, Fort Tompkins, Explore #473, Sept. 26, 2009

I posted this mainly to add it to my Fort Wadsworth group, and never expected it to make Explore! This is the entrance to the Dry Moat in Fort Tompkins, part of Gateway's Fort Wadsworth. When an enemy soldier drops down into the Dry Moat between the fort's walls, he's caught in a lethal crossfire from gun slits (see Note on photo) along the galleries on each side. Of course, the Confederate Army never attacked New York during the Civil War. These moats never held water. Note: I have a shot of the length of the moat in my comment below.
