GOODYEAR ELECTRONIC MAPPING SYSTEM (GEMS) 
The GEMS uses an aircraft mounted synthetic aperture radar to make maps of the ground over which the aircraft is flying. The system was developed by Goodyear Aerospace in the 1960s and was used on a variety of civilian and military aircraft including the SR-71. The unit here is the ground based processing unit which takes the information acquired by the radar and turns it into a printable image. The images produced have a resolution of approximately 10 meters, meaning that objects on the ground must be at least that size in order to be readily identified, 10 meters is about 33 feet.
