Motovun (kroatisch) oder Montona (italienisch) ist eine Stadt auf der Halbinsel Istrien im Nordwesten Kroatiens. Sie liegt 277 m über dem Meer auf einem steilen, isolierten Hügel über dem Tal der Mirna. Das historische Städtchen zählt heute etwa 500 Einwohner. Damit präsentiert sie sich doch deutlich anders als die allermeisten anderen Städtchen von Istrien, die an den Flüssen oder besser noch an der Küste ihr Heil suchten. Bereits vorrömischen Völkern diente der Hügel als Fluchtburg. Heute lebt dieses so anders gelegene Städtchen hauptsächlich vom Tourismus, dem Weinbau und den Trüffeln, die in den Wäldern rund um dieses Städtchen vermehrt gedeihen.

Motovun (Croatian) or Montona (Italian) is a town on the Istrian peninsula in north-west Croatia. It lies 277 metres above sea level on a steep, isolated hill above the Mirna valley. Today, the historic town has around 500 inhabitants. This makes it very different from the vast majority of other towns in Istria, which sought their salvation on the rivers or, even better, on the coast. Even pre-Roman peoples used the hill as a refuge. Today, this small town in such a different location lives mainly from tourism, viticulture and truffles, which thrive in the forests surrounding the town.
