Shiprock V - a photo on Flickriver

Shiprock V

            It's hard to see the scale of Shiprock in these images, or any images online.  The rock itself (the top covered in clouds in this image) is 1,583 feet tall - that's taller than the Empire State Building and just 232 feet shorter than the CN Tower.  Equally amazing are the dikes that lead up to Shiprock.  You can see one of them on the left here.  Though I couldn't find any height measurements for them online, they hundreds of feet tall in their own right.  Shiprock is the remainder of the 'neck' of an extinct volcano; the dikes leading to it are walls of rock formed when the hot lava fractured the rock that was there when the volcano erupted.  
 
Well, there you go - that your geology lesson for a Sunday morning.  :)
