Ely Cathedral 5386 - a photo on Flickriver

Ely Cathedral 5386

            Ely, Cathedral - the Presbytery and High Altar.
Begun in 1083, on the site of an earlier church, the present building is constructed of stone quarried from Barnack in Northamptonshire, Purbeck marble from Dorset and a local limestone, clunch. In the C14th, the central tower collapsed, and the current Octagonal Tower replaced it. It was restored 1750-70 by James Essex, mid C19th by George Gilbert Scott, and again at the end of the C20th. The Cathedral of the Holy and Undivided Trinity is a grade 1 listed building.
