The Battle of the Connemara Sunrise (2019-06-14)

            It was an early morning. I had dragged myself out of my warm sleeping pit, got in the car to Lough Derryclare and set up the camera before the inevitable hoards of smartphone toting togs disembarked from their tour buses and wandered into my carefully constructed frame.  It was a perfect moment… for the biting midges and mosquitos.  An unexpected early breakfast feast. I hope they enjoyed my O+ as much as I enjoyed their injection of histamine-inducing, and thereby itch-inducing, anticoagulant.  Little bastards.  I’m pleased to say a few of the insect vampires did not manage to fly off heavily laden with my blood.  But, alas, this was a war I knew I would never win.  So, in true guerrilla warfare fashion, I used hit-and-run tactics.  I took some snaps, did some damage to population of my winged nemesis, and then buggered off as quick as I could.  Itching.

Equipment: Nikon D7000, 10-24mm Nikkor @13mm.  ISO 100, F16 2.5 sec (+/-2EV bracket).  Manfrotto tripod.  Bite relief cream.

Post-production: 3 bracketed photos converted to HDR via Nik.  Red/orange gradient map with ~40% opacity, a couple of curve layers to control local exposure.
