Life and Death of an Ancient One

            The ancient Juniper trees on the mountain live for centuries, and can even be alive for millennia, growing slowly, twisted and gnarled by the harsh mountain elements.  Many of them stand for centuries even after death.  Eventually all trees fall, but even then the ancient wood disappears very slowly as it enriches the forest floor for another generation.  

Pictured is the long-dead, fallen wood of a Juniperus Scopulorum, also known as the Rocky Mountain juniper, that eternally rests beside my back patio.  It is one of dozens of trees of this species on my land that exceeds 18 inches in trunk diameter, indicating ages of between 1000 and 2000 years.
