Southbound CPKC "Final Spike Anniversary Steam Tour" Business Passenger Train at Stilwell, OK

            There's no amount of trickery one could pull on this trip to belie the fact we're living in 2024. This wasn't some trip on the UP with engines passing the same elevators in Nebraska that they ran by in the 50's. This isn't a photo charter, this is solidly modern day. But, I wanted to include a central element here, and that's the 2816 with CPKC Train 40B-21 passing the KCS Depot at Stilwell on the CPKC Heavener Sub.

This was the pipe dream end to end merger that the carriers licked their chops about for years, and this town was named after Arthur E. Stilwell, founder of the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad Company; later known as the Kansas City Southern Railway, a man that probably never could have envisioned a system of the size it is now, and certainly would have never dreamed of an engine built 2 years after his death passing through here at 93 years old.

CP 2816, known as "The Empress" is a H-1b Class 4-6-4 "Hudson" locomotive built in December 1930 by the Montreal Locomotive Works. It carries a builder number of 68535. The locomotive was retired in 1960 and languished in the Steamtown collection for several decades before being reacquired in 1998 by Canadian Pacific Railway for excursion service.

It was returned to service in 2001 and operated in Canada and the US until 2010. The engine was returned to service first in 2020 for tests in Canada, and was rebuilt in 2023 for the "Final Spike Anniversary Steam Tour" to Mexico City commemorating the one year anniversary of the CP-KCS Merger.
