The Royal Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand since 1782. It consists of not only royal and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square metres and is surrounded by four walls, 1900 metres in length. After King Rama I ascended to the throne in 1782, the palace was built. Fortunately, after the covid period, it is not yet busy with tourists. Thailand has just ended their quarantine policy. Face masks are no longer mandatory. Great to visit the Grand Palace one more time now. The Phra Ubosot, or ordination hall, occupies almost the entire southern part of the temple complex. The Ubosot is surrounded by a low wall; this separation emphasizes the sacred character of the building. The wall contains eight small pavilions with high spires, each with a double bai sema stone covered in gold leaf. In Thai religious architecture, such stones traditionally denote a sacred boundary within which the ordination of monks could be performed.

It is the city's biggest tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists. Construction of the Ubosot began during the reign of Rama I in 1783; as such, the building is one of the oldest structures in the temple. The Ubosot was built to house the Buddha statue known as the Emerald Buddha, which the king captured in 1779 from Vientiane, Laos. Photography is not allowed inside of the ordination hall in order to preserve the paintings, which can become damaged from flash photography and to be respectful of the Emerald Buddha icon; however, I shoot without flash and have respect of everything I shoot by my camera ;-)

De Royal Grand Palace is een gebouwencomplex in het hart van Bangkok, Thailand. Het paleis is sinds 1782 de officiële residentie van de koningen van Siam en later Thailand. Het bestaat niet alleen uit koninklijke en troonzalen, maar ook uit een aantal regeringsgebouwen en de beroemde Tempel van de groene Smaragd Boeddha. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 218.000 vierkante meter en is omgeven door vier muren van 1900 meter lang. Nadat koning Rama I in 1782 de troon besteeg, werd het paleis gebouwd. . Gelukkig is het na de covid periode nog niet druk met toeristen. Thailand heeft zojuist hun quarantainebeleid beëindigd. Mondkapjes zijn niet meer verplicht. Geweldig om het Grand Palace nu nog een keer te bezoeken. De Phra Ubosot of wijdingszaal, beslaat bijna het gehele zuidelijke deel van het tempelcomplex. De Ubosot is omgeven door een lage muur; deze scheiding benadrukt het heilige karakter van het gebouw. De muur bevat acht kleine paviljoens met hoge torenspitsen, elk met een dubbele bai sema-steen bedekt met bladgoud. In de Thaise religieuze architectuur duiden dergelijke stenen traditioneel een heilige grens aan waarbinnen de wijding van monniken kon worden uitgevoerd. De bouw van de Ubosot begon tijdens het bewind van Rama I in 1783; als zodanig is het gebouw één van de oudste structuren in de tempel. De Ubosot werd gebouwd om het Boeddhabeeld te huisvesten dat bekend staat als de Smaragdgroene Boeddha, die de koning in 1779 uit Vientiane, Laos had veroverd. Het is niet toegestaan om in de wijdingszaal te fotograferen om de schilderijen te behouden, die beschadigd kunnen raken door flitsfotografie en om het Emerald Buddha-pictogram te respecteren; ik fotografeer echter zonder flits en respecteer altijd alles wat ik fotografeer ;-)
