Atacama-Desert - Valle de la Luna - Chile

            The Atacama Desert (also called Atacama) stretches along the Pacific coast of South America between the 18th and 27th latitude south, ie approximately between the cities of Tacna in southern Peru and Copiapo in northern Chile, over a distance of about 1200 kilometers.
The Atacama is a coastal desert and the driest desert in the world outside the polar regions. There has been a hyperarid climate in its central area for at least 15 million years. There are places where rain has not been registered for decades, with average annual rainfall of just 0.5mm. Their southern range between the 24th and 27th degrees of latitude remained completely uninhabited until recent times.

The last stop of my trip to South America took me to Chile for a few days. Chile is also very scenic and probably one of the most prosperous countries in South America. Unfortunately, the peace does not seem to be permanent - very, very sad - I hope you can still find a reasonable and peaceful solution!

Atacama-Wüste - Tal des Mondes - Chile

Die Atacama-Wüste (auch kurz nur Atacama genannt) erstreckt sich entlang der Pazifikküste Südamerikas zwischen dem 18. und 27. Breitengrad Süd, also in etwa zwischen den Städten Tacna im Süden Perus und Copiapo im Norden Chiles, über eine Distanz von rund 1200 Kilometern. 
Die Atacama ist eine Küstenwüste und die trockenste Wüste der Erde außerhalb der Polargebiete. In ihrem zentralen Bereich besteht schon seit wenigstens 15 Millionen Jahren ein hyperarides Klima. Es gibt Orte, an denen jahrzehntelang kein Regen registriert wurde, mit durchschnittlichen jährlichen Niederschlagshöhen von nur 0,5 mm. Ihr südlicher Bereich zwischen dem 24. und 27. Breitengrad blieb deswegen bis in jüngere geschichtliche Zeit hinein völlig unbesiedelt.

Die letzte Station meiner Südamerikareise führte für einige wenige Tage nach Chile. Chile ist landschaftlich auch sehr schön und ansonsten wohl eines der wohlhabendsten Länder in Südamerika. Leider scheint der Friede nicht von Dauer zu sein - sehr, sehr schade - ich hoffe man findet noch zu einer vernünftigen und friedlichen Lösung!
